Diary of Anne Frank (The Play)

The Diary of Anne Frank (play)
Francis Goodrich and Albert Hackett

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Critics' Circle Award, and virtually every other coveted prize of the theater, this play has garnered much praise. From The New York Times: "A lovely tender drama. Strange how the shining spirit of a young girl now dead can filter down through the years and inspire a group of theatrical professionals in a foreign land." "As bright and shining as a banner" wrote the New York Herald Tribune.

The Stolen Legacy of Anne Frank -
Meyer Levin, Lillian Hellman, and the Staging of the Diary
Ralph Melnick

A dissenting view of sorts, this book describes Meyer Levin's conviction that Anne Frank's story was 'de-Judaized' for the American stage through the efforts of Lillian Hellman and her associates. Levin, who had written a more 'Jewish' play about Anne Frank, was convinced that a conspiracy existed to delete the Jewish elements from the diary. Melnick's book is a thorough and careful study of what transpired among those opposed to Levin.

The Diary of Anne Frank (play)
Francis Goodrich and Albert Hackett, adapted by Wendy Kesselman

In this gripping new adaptation by Wendy Kesselman, from the original stage play by Goodrich and Hackett, newly discovered writings from the diary of Anne Frank, as well as survivor accounts, are interwoven to create a contemporary impassioned story of the lives of people persecuted under Nazi rule.  In this transcendently powerful new adaptation, Anne Frank emerges from history a living, lyrical, intensely gifted young girl, who confronts her rapidly changing life and the increasing horror of her time with astonishing honesty, wit, and determination.
