Just as in many families, the photo album of the Frank family begins with the birth of the first child. As an amateur photographer, Otto Frank has a single theme: the life and times of his daughters Anne and Margot. Nothing we see in Otto Frank’s photos reveals the horrors that Anne and her family will have to endure. What we now know about the fate of Anne Frank affects our perception of her book, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. Equally so, it is now impossible to view the photos that portray her life with an impartial eye.
The exhibit consists of 71 photographs, many of which have never been shown to the public. The photos are reproductions from the Frank family albums, some of which have only recently been discovered. A DVD, “The Short Life of Anne Frank,” is also provided for screening with this exhibit.
Specifications and Costs: Anne Frank: A Private Photo Album
The photographs are mounted on aluminum panels measuring 16 inches wide by 26 inches high. There is also a title panel, 10 text panels, and 3 credit panels the same size. The panels are designed to be wall-hung, requiring a minimum of 120 running wall feet. Double-hanging the panels would reduce the space required to about 60 running wall feet. The rental fee for this exhibit is $15,000 per month, plus two-way shipping—typically less than $1,000 each way.
