This condensed exhibit follows the life of Anne Frank from her birth in Frankfurt, Germany, on June 12, 1929 through her death at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in March 1945. The exhibit recounts the events that led to the Frank family’s flight from Germany to The Netherlands in 1933. It describes the growth of Nazism in Germany, the invasion of the Netherlands in 1940 and life under Nazi rule. Panels are dedicated to Anne Frank’s life in the “Secret Annex,” the helpers, and the family’s eventual betrayal and deportation to Nazi concentration camps.
Photos from the Frank family albums are combined with historical images from the period. These photographs illustrate what life was like for the Frank family and millions of other Jews and persecuted minorities in Nazi-occupied Europe. The exhibit includes entries from Anne Frank’s diary, in which she describes her life in hiding and her impressions of the events taking place in the outside world. The exhibit concludes with a description of Anne Frank’s legacy, including the educational work of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdamand the Anne Frank Center-USA.
