JOSEPH KANON is the author of four novels: Alibi, winner of the International Hammett Prize for Literary Excellence in Crime Writing; the bestselling Los Alamos (winner of the Edgar Award for best first novel); and The Prodigal Spy. His novel The Good German is now a major motion picture from Warner Bros., directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, and Tobey Maguire. He was educated at Harvard and at Trinity College, Cambridge. While still an undergraduate, he began a career in publishing as a reader for The Atlantic Monthly and went on to a series of editorial and managerial positions, including President and CEO of E. P. Dutton, and Executive Vice-President at Houghton Mifflin as head of Trade and Reference Publishing. Now a full-time writer, he lives in New York with his wife and two sons.
“As he did in Los Alamos, Kanon demonstrates an eerie mastery of the evocative historical detail. His Berlin is both a tree-shaded prewar memory and a bomb-blasted postwar hellscape where mile upon mile of burned-out buildings gape skyward like decayed teeth. You can feel the shattered glass crunching beneath your feet as you read. You can smell the smoke-scorched broken bricks. . . . Kanon is as ambitious a novelist as he is a gifted one, and his ideas linger in the mind.” — The Washington Post
“Kanon spins an ever-more-riveting thriller that is bolstered by vivid period detail, genuine characters, and a thoughtful exploration of the many layers of postwar German guilt.” — Entertainment Weekly
