The Judith M. Vale
2004 Outstanding Educator Award

ABBIE R. LASKEY has been a teacher at the Herricks Middle School in New Hyde Park, New York, since 1970, and in that time has taught countless numbers of students about the Holocaust and the resistance. In her curriculum, she stresses the importance of moral courage and of making connections with others through acts of kindness. Ms. Laskey has organized a circle of her colleagues to improve and expand the teaching of the Holocaust and resistance. In addition to teaching at the middle school, Ms. Laskey has also worked with the Holocaust Memorial and Education Center in Glen Cove, New York. With that group she has created such programs as The Literature of the Holocaust & Resistance. Ms. Laskey has attended and presented at many conferences, including the first Displaced Persons Conference, sponsored by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the New York State English Teachers Conference, where she presented a workshop on teaching inter-related units on slavery, heroes, and Holocaust & Resistance. In November, 2003, Ms. Laskey was the recipient of the Louis E. Yavner teaching award which is presented to a teacher who has made outstanding contributions to teaching about the Holocaust and other human rights violations. Said one of Ms. Laskey’s former students, “Mrs. Laskey has made a tremendous contribution to so many students, and I firmly believe that her teachings place a new generation on a path of awareness and most importantly, activism with abundant compassion.”
