The Margit Polak Shield and Harvey Shield
2005 Outstanding Educator Award

SR. LINDA NEIL, CSJ, teaches for the Catholic Central High School in Troy, NY where she resides. She had a reputation for promoting justice, tolerance, and respect over the thirty years she has been a Catholic educator and school administrator before delving into the root causes of anti-Semitism. Following her participation at a conference titled Bearing Witness: Anti-Semitism the Holocaust and Contemporary Issues, Sr. Neil not only expanded catechetical curriculum to incorporate the lessons of the Holocaust, but also created educational programming that she has brought to the larger community, including students taking morality courses at Marina College in Albany, teachers of the Capital District attending a seminar sponsored by the Holocaust Survivors and Friends Education Center, Roman Catholic school administrators from the Albany region, and the conference of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany. Her 'trademark' We Remember seminar series includes Holocaust Education That Sows Peace and Understanding; A Reflection of the Shoah; and the 59th Anniversary of the Holocaust which incorporates area survivors as speakers. In addition to many affiliations as a Catholic educator, Sr. Neil is an active member of many professional organizations, including Holocaust Survivors and Friends in Search of Justice, and the Holistic Orientation for Peace Education Board; her broader interests include the work of Amnesty International and the Nature Conservancy.

Sr. Neil is a bridge builder. She models religious understanding as a core value for her students as she teaches the importance of developing a world based on tolerance, peace, and harmony.
