KRYSTAL SARCONE of Corlandt Manor, New York, is a senior at the Hendrick Hudson High School. She is known for her service to school and community through various organizations. Students United for Cultural Awareness is one dedicated to cultural enrichment. Most notably, Ms. Sarcone single-handedly raised $6,000 dollars to go to Rau Village in Tanzania one summer to teach English to Swahili speaking primary school students and decided to commit further upon her return by instituting a pen pal program between the Henrick Hudson School District and Kariwa Primary. This meant acquiring paper, pens, pencils, and stamps for the young African students through presentations to middle and high school students to keep this connection energized. Ms. Sarcone is also a member of Students Against Drunk Driving, and Students Terminating Abusive Relationships, and has been instrumental in keeping this latter organization vital through ongoing student dialogue. She has worked on 2 housing projects for Habitat for Humanity, participated in walks to help the homeless and AIDS victims, and volunteered to both operate a concession stand and participate in the Varsity Club sponsored 10 mile run to benefit to defray the costs of the cancer treatments for the mother of one of the students. She has been the captain of the Cross Country, Winter, and Spring Track teams for 2 years after overcoming a diagnosis and treatment for scoliosis; her events include the pole vault and hurdles. As a track and field athlete, Ms. Sarcone was named 'the best female runner ever at the school' by her coach. This honoree is a peer tutor, a member of the National Honor Society, a talented musician, and an aspiring artist.
Ms Sarcone possesses an unselfish desire to serve others and hopes to have a career for an international health organization after obtaining her undergraduate degree at Ithaca College.
