After a life-altering experience in 1990 on the International March of the Living program, GAYLE TALLMAN began to work to develop and promote understanding among people of all backgrounds while ensuring her home community of Edmonton did not forget the horrors of the Holocaust. She has since been a leader of the March nine times, and she coordinates all Holocaust Education speakers and Remembrance Day services for the Edmonton community.
Gayle Tallman created the Annual Facing Hate Symposium, which annually educates 2100 Grade 12 students about the evils of racism, and how through the Holocaust, we have modern day lessons we can learn. Due in large part to her tireless efforts, the Alberta Provincial Government passed the Holocaust Day Memorial Act, creating an annual Remembrance Day. In addition, Gayle worked to ensure the creation of a Holocaust Memorial on the site of the Legislature, only the second one in Canada.
As the Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of Edmonton for the past six years, Gayle has continued to work on anti-racism and education programs and projects. Recently she worked on the creation of an educational DVD for schools that includes a teacher’s manual and documentary of 10 local survivors. Gayle continues her work in the promotion of tolerance and understanding with the Edmonton Police Services Hate and Bias Crime Unit, the Chief of Police Advisory Committee, the Canadian Jewish Congress, and other interfaith and ethnic communities.
