“I saw myself in the mirror, and it looked so different.  My eyes were clear and deep, my cheeks were rosy, which they hadn’t been in weeks, my mouth much softer.  I looked happy and yet there was something so sad in my expression that the smile completely faded from my face.” Anne Frank, January 7, 1944

FAMILY PROGRAMS
The Anne Frank Center is open free to the public on the First Sunday of each month, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  We invite you to stop by the gallery, view the permanent exhibit ANNE FRANK: A HISTORY FOR TODAY, speak with an educator, watch a video of “The Short Life of Anne Frank”, and buy some books.
In addition, free Family Programs are offered from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM: Torn Paper Collage – for ages 7 to adult. Children practice visual reading by searching the exhibit for key elements in Anne’s story which lead to her room in the Secret Annex. Children are asked to create a room of their own using a torn paper collage technique, a room where they can quietly read, write and observe, and to create a picture of themselves in the room.

SELF-PORTRAIT WINNERS EXHIBIT
The Diary of Anne Frank can be read as a verbal self-portrait.  Understanding herself was Anne’s key to understanding the world around her. NYC sixth, seventh and eighth grade private and public middle school students from all five boroughs are invited to send a visual and verbal self-portrait of themselves, no larger than 11”x14”.

Submission deadline is April 1st and must be postmarked by that date.

Contest winners will be exhibited in the AFC gallery from June 16 through August 29. The opening celebration is Saturday, June 21, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM.
We invite you to see for yourself NYC’s fascinating and diverse middle school art!

CELEBRATE INDPENDENT THINKING:
Lecture, Film & Art Series
In celebration of Anne Frank’s 80th birthday in 2009, this series will begin in the fall of 2008 with an award-winning documentary film by Michele Ohayan “Steal a Pencil for Me”, and films on contemporary Dutch-Jewish history by filmmaker Renee Sanders.
Dates and times will be announced in August.

DIARY 21
This educational program is a collaboration with Stephen Sondheim’s organization, Young Playwrights Inc., designed to create an outlet for NYC high school writers.  Children continue to be at risk throughout the world.  The human spirit continues to be marginalized.  Voices caught in violence continue to go unheard.  Race, religion and life-style prejudice continues to flourish.  And Anne Frank’s words continue to resonate in the 21st Century. Did we listen?  Did we learn?  Should we listen again?

Sunday, April 13, 2008, Diary 21 presents ANNE FRANK AND FRIENDS ASK…ARE WE WRITING LOUD ENOUGH? The Anne Frank Center USA and Young Playwrights presents an original text written by members of the Young Playwrights Inc. advanced playwriting workshop, 2008. Pre-Performance Reception is a 5:00pm. Performance is at 6:00 PM.
